Bake or Buy? Why You Should Buy Baklava

Many often wonder if they should buy or bake baklava.

With large celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr gathering people together, it's a key question as buying can be costly.

Yet, with baking, more can go wrong—and you have a lot on your plate already.

Let Layla be the first to tell you: You should buy Baklava, and you should buy it from us.

Want to know why? Let's take a brief look at the baking process first to understand a bit more about why we say this.

How to Bake Baklava

The Ingredients

  • Filo dough
  • Unsalted butter
  • Orange blossom water
  • Rose water
  • Pistachios

You can get these ingredients at your local store. However, you have to balance flavors to produce baklava with its characteristic taste.

The Process

  1. Prepare the dough (if you don’t buy it frozen and prepacked).
  2. Soak each sheet of filo dough in sugary syrup.
  3. Layer the dough.
  4. Mix sugar and pistachios with a sweet 70:30 ratio of nuts to sugar.
  5. Spritz just the right amount of fragrant orange blossom and rose water.

Unfortunately, there’s also a lot that can go wrong between placing your baking tray in the oven and setting your treats to bake. Worst case scenario, your baklava comes out dry and slightly burned.

Making the best baklava needs keen eyes and a fast hand.

Fortunately, there’s a service that will gladly handle this for you—and it might even turn out cheaper.

The Expenses

Baking a small tray of baklava to enjoy at home might not be expensive. However, baklava is a celebratory dessert.

You’ll need a longer list of ingredients if you’re making baklava for about 30-50 guests.

All these ingredients come at a cost. A kilo of unshelled pistachios, for example, costs about $29. Store-bought filo sheets cost about $2.99 for six layers. If you were to go completely Greek and use 40 layers of filo dough, that’s about $15.

And don’t even mention the cost of pure organic rose water.

By the time you get the entire list of authentic ingredients, your wallet’s inching toward the red, but Layla’s Delicacies sources all of the ingredients for you.

We Stay True to Its Roots

Our identity as Layla’s Delicacies is imprinted in the delicacies we bake. Baklava is as historical as it is celebratory.

The pastry, its methods, and its relevance go back to the 8th Century. The Assyrians thinned out the dough, dipped it in honey, and baked it with nuts between the dough. This recipe spread to other Middle Eastern cultures.

Whenever a country had a taste, they added or changed an ingredient. Yet, in all its travels, baklava remained a pastry for the rich.

As the recipe traveled towards Greece, It was immortalized as a pastry for good times in all the countries it touched.

Fast forward to the present US; you can now bake baklava at home. Alternatively, Layla’s Delicacies can give you some with Tunisian twist. Sit back and order, we’ll bake and deliver. It's a win-win.
